On the use of sulphur as a tracer for abundances in galaxies

Abstract 2+We present a methodology for the use of sulphur as global metallicity tracer in galaxies, allowing performing complete abundance analysis using only red-to-near-infrared spectral region. We have applied it to compilation high-quality data split into two samples: H ii regions (DHR) spiral and irregular dwarf galaxies dominated by strong starburst (H Gal). Sulphur abundances been derived direct methods under assumption an ionization structure composed zones: intermediate-ionization one where S++ is originated, low-ionization S+ formed. Ionization correction factors (ICF) calculated from Ar/Ar3+ ratio are shown correlate with hardness radiation field. Only about 10 per cent objects show S3+ contributions total larger than 30 cent. A good correlation exists between ionizing temperature low-metallicity being ionized hotter stars. No found parameter S/H abundance. Most Gal S/O ratios below solar value trend increasing abundances, while DHR tendency lower higher metallicities. Finally, we calibration through S23 that remains single valued up well beyond value. independent weakly dependent on temperature.
